Default CV axle clicking but boot is not cracked?

Hi All, I have a general question about cv axle problems and I need some advice. We have a 2004 Freestar but I guess this could happen on any car. In any event, we have the clicking sound on the front left (drivers side) especially on turns. Normally this is a sign of a bad cv axle, which is usually the result of a boot failure. Well, I had to get down under the car to see if there are ABS tone rings on the cv axle for this vehicle (which I couldn't tell see so if anybody knows if this model has tone rings or not, please let me know). Anyway, the boots on the cv axle are in great shape?? I have never had a cv axle issue without the boot being torn or loose. Is it possible to have a cv joint failure with the boots intact? Or does this mean the problem is something else? (YES, I checked the lug nuts already).
