Question Ecoboost engine - Turbocharger inquiry

Hi, all! Happy Friday!

1. I am trying to determine if the turbocharger on a 2016 EcoBoost engine is actually considered to be part of the engine block / head, or if it is not technically considered to be a part of either of these things.

The new Illinois Vehicle Code provides a 155 day, 500 mile implied warranty for fitness of use when buying a used car. 3 days after my purchase, the turbocharger went bad. It is only covered under this law if - the failure is a part that is considered to be the engine block, head, internal engine part, oil pan and gaskets, water pump, intake manifold, transmission, internal transmission part, torque converter, drive shaft, universal joint, rear axle, or rear wheel bearings.

2. Also, if a turbocharger goes bad, are there other things tht I should be imminently worried about either going bad or being bad, also?

Thanks so much for the help!

Jacq.

To go bad in three days, I would think either it was on it's way out or you did something you may not have been aware should not be done.

A turbo uses exhaust pressure to turn a turbine on one end of the shaft , which has on the other end an impeller to blow fresh filtered air into the intake of the engine.

Unless you already knew the following, someone should have informed you that after a heavy pull or hot demanding run, the engine should be allowed to idle for a few minutes before shut down to prevent lack of oil pressure to the turbo bearings causing them to cook the oil left on the bearings. The short idle period allows the motor oil to remove a lot of the accumulated heat and prevent destroying the bearings and seals.

There must be an underlying reason as to why you are wanting to know how a turbo is viewed.

The turbo is part of the air intake system and the engine will run without it working properly , but not very well. If the air filter was disturbed and allowed dirty air to get into the air intake , the condition referred to as "Dusted" can wipe out an engine pretty quick. If this condition is observed with an engine failure or turbo failure , warranty coverage is voided..

Thank you for the response

So would you say it is part of the intake manifold, then, or no?

This is a used 2016 Ford Fusion SD, so I am not sure if it was already bad or if I did something to cause it. Either way, they certainly did not tell me anything like that! Not cool!

To further arm yourself, you might check what it says in your owner's manual. They can't dispute that. !
The turbo is generally mounted on the exhaust manifold where it gets it's driving power. Hoses and piping bring air into the filter then the turbo then through an intercooler (Charge air cooler) to the intake manifold to go into the engine. It is not mounted on the intake manifold, generally. Don't worry , somebody has this all figured out !!

I would suggest that you get another opinion, a good shop or even a dealership service dept might be able to shed more light on this problem. Get as much info as you can from qualified sources and you might get lucky.
