Default Electrical problem on 1950 ford convertible

I lost my key so I wired from the battery side of the coil to the battery. It worked fine. Then we found the key, and unhooked the wire from the battery, but forgot to take it off the coil. The wire stayed on the coil but the battery wire went over to the generator and hooked on the the generator wire. We took the wire off the coil and generator, and we turned the engine off. But it would not start again. The engine won't turn over or anything. It will make a little noise like when you have a dead battery. But if you try. It again it won't do anything. If you unhook the battery and hook it back up again it will make the same sound. But only once. I've checked the battery and it is good. I don't know what I could have burned up to make this happen. I was wondering if their is a fuse able link or something. But I've been told no. Please help me I'm at my wits end and need to get it running. We are going to a big charity car show.
Thank You

Unplug the voltage regulator to start with.
Don't remember if these had a positive ground system, did it?
If the battery is with some power left in it the vehicle should start with the generator wires OFF. If it doesn't you need to confirm that power is getting to the coil and the contact points in the dist are opening and are not burned.
There is the possibility a wire has been overheated and is either open or shorting to ground.
NEED TO TAKE ONE STEP AT A TIME HERE.
