Default Fuel Gauge Problems

I own a 2002 Windstar and lately the fuel gauge has been all over the place.....sometimes it registers full.....another ride on the highway it went to empty with the gas light on three different times......and then it's somewhere in the middle but I know it's not correct......is there anything that is uauslly the culprit with this problem?.....any help would be greatly appreciated...........thanks

might be a loose ground wire on top of tank, sending unit for guage is inside the tank and part of the fuel pump assembly...

could be loose wire, ground, hot or short. but probably not likely if its working at all and will most likely be the sending unit. which is a whole assembly with the fuel pump. you would have to get a new fuel pump which comes with sending unit and piggy harness, if you find that to be the culprit. good luck
