Gas Mileage? 1984 F-150 with 302 HO Engine
I am looking into buying a very nice and clean 1984 F-150 4x4 that the owner put a 302 high output motor out of a 1998 ford explorer in. I was wondering what you good people would think the MPG's on this vehicle would be. Let me know if what you think if you would. Thanks.

I would expect no more than 13 city/18 hwy, if you're easy on the pedal and the engine is bone stock. Which is about right for an F-150 4x4. Ford is very liberal with their "high output" designation. For example the '85 351 H.O. had about 20 more HP than the standard 351. Yes it's more power, but enough to call it H.O.? I don't think so. If you are looking for performance upgrades, the '98 5.0 is a decent platform. Many (if not all) Mustang performance parts are interchangeable.

Don't want to stomp on your 302 H.O., but hope you didn't buy the truck because the sell said that the engine was a H.O. engine. I just want to provide some insite to your engine. Ford started installing the GT-40P heads on the Explorer mid-year 1997. A lot of people were misled into believing that these heads made the 302 put out a lot more HP, but they didn't.
There were no High Output engines in any Explorer unless it was a Saleen XP6 or XP8 with a massaged engine. The 302 out of the 1998 Explorer is a Plain Ole' 302 @ 215 HP, just 10 more ponies than the 4.0 SOHC @ 205 HP. The 215 HP is with the GT-40P heads that are used on the 302 since mid-year 1997. The heads only netted Ford a 5 HP gain. Now if your 302 came out of a Saleen XP8 supercharged version, then you would have 286 HP.
