Default Help with Classic Ford transmission

Restoring a 1949 Ford sedan with my dad. We have a 289 that we pulled from a 60's mustang and rebuilt to go into the 49'. We are trying to figure out what type of transmission to go with that will bolt up to the 289 and work with the existing 3spd column shifter. My dad wants to go with an automatic transmission but I am convinced that a 3spd manual will require less modification as the car is already setup to work this way. What do you think? Manual or automatic? And, what type of transmission will work? as my dad and I dont know much about transmissions.

Thanks for your help!

Well, this really comes down to what you want; the 289 would bolt up to just about any transmission, from the 3 or (rare) 4 speed manual to a FX, MX, FMX or C-4 transmission. The shifter will require modification no matter what transmision is installed, albeit just a shifter linkage mod to the trans. Either way, modifying the exsiting linkage to an automatic isn't that worrisome. And trans that is put up to a 289 will hold the power (probably better then new), and would most likely result in a better running truck. And, it would be able to haul a load or tow when needed, without worry.

Those were the days when you had real flexibility with vehicles. If I am correct that was the first year they came out with the new body style with the curved rear fenders and lights and took some getting used to when backing up since the body didn't go straight back. Brings back some memories. Good Luck with the restoration, some pix with your progress?
