Default help the kid out

hi all,

thx for the few secs, i have a 84 F250 and ive been workin on the ignition system for a week or two. so far ive either replaced or thoughly looked over all the parts (new; starter, bat, bat wires, solonoid, flywheel, brain or computer thing, looked over; spark plugs, sp wires, made sure ditributor was tight, ext.) i think ive fixed the last bug that was holding the starter from spinin round(dead bat, and neg bat cable was not getting a good grounded conection). well my first obstical is a sticky ignition switch, it stays engaged even after being fliped back manualy, and well it should flip back by its self. i need to know how to clean or pull out the ignition switch to take out 20 years out desert dust lol. after that i think im in smooth sailing till i acutaly start it and run it. after say about five minutes of running if i turn it off, it will not re turn over. it sounds like a pre igniton, the starter clanks and turns over slowly if at all as if lack of power or high compression. if i continue to try it it just drain the bat and gets the wires hot. any help or links would be muchly apperiated!!

You might try squirting some WD40 into the ignition key slot, with any luck it will get into the works and free up some of the binding.

As far as the high current draw on your battery when trying to start, it sounds like you have got some break down in the starter motor windings or the solonoid coil is going bad, because it sounds like you are getting the juice there but it is pulling way too much current. But you replaced those so I wonder what is going on there. Well the starter circuit is not so complicated. The other possiblility is that the engine/transmission is so tight that it is causing so much strain on the starter that is what is causing the high drain. Might need to have the starter checked again. Even if it is new, it would not be the first time that a new/rebuilt starter just is not doing the job.

i got it running today. heard a new knock though.. will have to investagate. as for it not startin we found out that the neg bat cable wasnt getting a good conection, and my battery was dead, when arcd over it bearly sparked. fixed that. now for the starting while hot it didn't get me any problems today so hopefully it was just the lose conection and dead cell. thxs for your time
