Default M Sable computer won't let car start!!

Hello all,

I have a 99 Mercury Sable. Turning the ignition key does nothing; the power comes on but it doesn't crank. The starter cranks when poles connected from under the car, but no power goes to the spark plugs. After much diagnosis, my mechanic concluded that the car computer prevents the car from starting for security reasons. I did insert a wrong key sometime back when the car was having battery problems. It never started since then. He told me that the computer needs to be reprogrammed. Who does this? I am located in Northern VA, Dulles area. Can I do it myself?

Thank you....

Try disconnecting the battery cables and leave them off for about 15 min. See if it will reset its self that way if not my guess would be take it to the dealer

You need to have the PCM programmed at the dealer or at a shop that has a tool capable of reconfiguring the parameters of the PCM.

And hern615, if all you can do is post e-mails to someone, or a site of a private individual, that does not help anyone on the forum. People look for answers, not to be chasing all over the net. I post some links to sites, but there is information there that can be useful to anyone that clicks on the links.

Sable99, I am having the exact same problem with my 2000 explorer. Did you find the fix?

Did anyone notice that the theft or key and lock symbol in the instrument cluster was flashing? This is a dead giveaway that the PATS (Passive anti-theft) is at fault. Sometimes from rattling around in people's pockets, the little chip comes out and said problem can occur. If this is not the case and the problem started after a jump-start/battery faliure, then I would (just a wild guess that I've seen 1,000 times before) think that the car had booster cables hooked up wrong. This is a common Ford-ism.
Otherwise, if it is PATS releated, a code P1260 would set in the PCM (theft detected, engine immobilized). Then it becomes a PATS diag, which would probably lead to a halo or key problem.
The bitch of this is that just because a key that is cut right will start the car, if it isn't programmed, it won't start.
However, with these cars getting stolen a lot, I wonder where I can go to get lessons of the theives so I can use this in the shop....it would save alot of time!
