McPherson Strut spring seat?

McPherson Strut spring seat?
I am having trouble with the steering on my 04 Freestar. When driving in a straight line, everything is good, turning to the right also seems fine. When I turn the wheel towards the left, just past centre, there is an audible clunk that I can feel in the wheel. At this point the vehicle lurches, slightly, to the left. Something is hanging up. Power steering seem fine. Not stiff, just changed the oil. Anyone had a go with this? I am wondering if I have a bad spring seat bearing on the top of one of the struts. Any suggestions on how to diagnose this? Note: It does not do it with the weight off the front end. I pulled the wheels, front end in the air and problem is gone.

If it does it while parked ,you could try having someone turn the steering wheel while the vehicle is on the ground and you feel the upper spring seat. If is coming from there you should feel the clunk. Sometimes you need to play detective and chase the noise while someone is turning the steering wheel for you.
Curious to know what you find.

Seems when the tranny boys dropped the subframe to rebuild the slushbox, they did not torque the rack bolts properly. Stopped the noise but could only get one tight without dropping the exhaust. I'll save that for another day!
