question about 2004 4wheel dr expedition
Walmart told me I have a leaking something. It is in the front by the tire and it's a seal. Maybe it was a differential thing. Obviously I know nothing about car's. I am just a old woman on a very fixed income. Can anyone give me a idea if this is a expensive fix? They said it leak's whenever I put my car in a different gear like backing up. Also is this something that needs to be fixed immediately?

Without knowing exactly where it's leaking from and how much or volume of the leak, its always hard to give advice or any repair estimate. Meaning, how hard it is to get at the leaking seal, or what has to be removed. If you can better identify the leaking seal/area, or better yet, if you can take a picture of the leaking area with a digital camera (or have someone take it) and post the pics here it would certainly help with a guesstimate. In most cases if its just a 'weeping' seal it's generally not a huge concern. If its a substantial leak then it can be a problem, more so if not checked for lubricant level or containment that the seal is intended to control. It sounds in your description like an axle seal, could be one of the inner seal/s leaking down the axle tube on down to the tire area. Usually going into reverse wouldn't cause a axle seal to leak more, although running in 4x4 would. Transmission/transfer case may follow the gear change leak, but isn't or shouldn't show up by the front tire area. Do you know the color of the leaking fluid? Or sometimes if you place a large piece of cardboard under the front ect. you can 'spot check' the approx. location, color, and volume of the leak under normal driving conditions..
