Default Synthic Oils

Hello all
Im sure you get this post alot I just bouht a Expedition and was wondering do I need to change to synthic oil? I know that its not good to change over if you have high miles. So I value your opinions.

Default RE: Synthic Oils

I'll probably get hit in the head with a shovel because I know absolutely nothing about lubricants, but here I go with a quick non-technical rundown...

It is "NOT BAD" to switch to a synthetic on a high mileage vehicle unless it is burning oil at a high rate. First, oil has two major jobs, lubrication and internal component cooling. The issue with switching to a synthetic on a high mileage vehicle is leaks. These are leaks that the synthetic oil finds for you. How do they do that you ask? All motor oils are a "DETERGENT" motor oil. The DETERGENT is designed not to clean the engine, but to suspend particals (dirt and combustion by-products)in the oil so that they can be filtered out and flushed oit when the oil is drained. A true synthetic motor oil is produced from esters and diester base stocks. These are a natural CLEANER (notice CLEANER vs DETERGENT) and WILL actually clean the inside of the engine or any component that a synthetic is put into. The ability of the synthetic to clean will eventually clean away the sludge that is plugging any gasket leaks that was plugged with the sludge. Thus, the old wives tale myth that synthetics cause your gaskets to leak. Synthetics have numberous advantages over DINO juice (CASTROL SYNTECH is NOT a synthetic, but a highly refined DINO juice with a better than average additive package).

Some advantages of synthetics:
1. Keeps intenals cleaner
2. Reduce friction
3. Reduce component wear
4. Reduce internal operating temperatures
5. Increase component longevity with the above advantages
6. Increase fuel mileage
7. Extend maintainence period depending on product MFG
8. Thermally more stable (less evaperation at operating temps)
9. Lower pour point for faster cold weather flowing to components
10. Eliminates dry starts due to its ability to leave a film on components
11. Will reduce oil consumtion up to 48% depending on the MFG due to synthetics ability to maintain better viscocity

Which ones to use? AMSOIL, MOBIL-1, ROYAL PURPLE, which ever you want as long as it's a quality synthetic. Even a cheap synthetic is better than a straight DINO juice oil.

I use AMSOIL in everything from my Freestar, 17.5kw Generac generator, 28 year old Gilson snowblower, push mowers to my weed wacker

You get the idea, but your the one who has to make the decision.
