Default What to do?

Goodmorning,
I'm writing today because I need some advice. I have a 05 Tarus w/3.0 auto 20,000 miles and on extended drives of more than 20 minutes or so I get the check engine light. After several drive cycles the light resets. Around town, short drives, the light stays off. Have been to the dealer 4 times for this condition and am told there are no problems. I have tried to access the codes using a inexpensive code reader and get the message "comunication error". I know there is a problem somewhere, the light keeps reappearing. What should I do? I am not sure what the next step should be. In advance I would like to thank any and all who answer.

what scan tool are you using? if you have a com error check the fuses if the data link fuse is blown it won't comunicate, you may have a type a misfire the check engine light will go out once it goes away if you get the scan tool to work keep it with you and scan it as soon as the light comes back on.
