wont start check engine?

Default wont start check engine?

Got a prob. My 96 Ford contour gl will not start. It turns over but doesnt start. also when I turn the key into the on position the check engine light doesnt come on. Isn't it supposed to come on then go off after a few seconds. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Yes, the check engine light is supposed to come on for a few seconds with the key in the "on" position, but it could be that the bulb is burnt out. As far as it not starting...it could be any number of things....a couple of thingsyou can do to narrow it down is.

1) When you turn the key to the on position, listen for the sound of the fuel pump kicking on. If you can't hear that sound, then chances are a relay is bad.

2) Change the fuel filter...that should be done about every 30,000 miles.

3)Pull one of your plug wires off and have someone try and start the car while you ground the wire somewhere on the car to see if you are getting spark. That should eliminate some of the starter problems.

Once you check those post again and we'll see what we've got...I have two contours..a 1995 & 1997. I have run into similar problems.

i switched the relay to one similar and that didnt help. i will do the spark test 2moro when i get up.
