Default advice on exhaust

I am looking for some solid advice... I have a 1992 Ford Explorer and the exhaust is shot and needs to be replaced. The catalytic converter is no longer needed, and I plan to remove that... The question I have is this... Is it your opinion that I replace the exhaust system as it is in the truck to the tune of 700 dollars, or is there a different alternative that would work just as well? I just don't want to sink so much money in the exhaust if I can help it... A neighbor suggested I just "straight pipe it" but I am not resting too easy with that option either.... Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Ron Clayton

Why is the catalytic converter no longer needed?

The cats are no longer needed because they probably stopped working in 1993. The 4.0L OHV engine could pass anything but the emissions test. Lucky you don't have the e-test where you live.
I have a cheapo recomendation. Use a cheap old (possibly parts house) straight pipe to a glass pack (also known as a cherry bomb) muffler. They do allow a little more noise from the exhaust, but they sound agressive and not loud enough where people think a 16 year old kid is trying to soup this thing up is comming their way. Most part houses will have a cheaper DIY parts listing for these. Possibly a muffler shop could do something for you.
