Question Any Answers Appreciated

I am new to this site and googling to see what is wrong with my 1998 F150.

:confu sed:

I used a home computer on it and it showed EGR Valve needs replacing also a misfiring. I had the plugs changed and it seemed to be a bit better. Now 6-8 months later the truck chokes very bad when I step on the gas at all and I smell fuel strong. I can't use the air conditioning because it really makes it loud. I am going through quite a bit more fuel and have been told by many that the EGR Valve is most likely not the problem. I had a mechanice take a look under the hood and he said it sounds like its misfiring. I wonder if I got bad plugs or since i didn't change the cords this could be a problem. When a friend changed the plugs he said the #3 was really lose, and I'm not sure if it could come lose again? and why it did in the 1st place.

I am not that great with mechanics obviously and would like a better idea before I head to another mechanic. I am a woman, but not a dumb one and like to have a pretty good idea before I go so my money isn't wasted as well.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Hello and welcome. Before we start, please give the engine size and what the trouble code numbers are. The engine size will help us determine if the loose plug is a common Ford problem, or just a random problem. Ford's spark plugs and the plug threads are not the best design in the automotive field. So if you can provide us with that information and be patient until we get time to read the posts again, we will be more than happy to try to help you.

Default Thanks

Sorry for the delay...I had to ask the person who hooked up their tester for me.

He said my motor is a 4.2 motor and it was the number 3 cylinder misfiring and the EGR valve plugged is what his machine read. I don't know the exact codes he lives 2 hours away from where i live.

Does this help?

Thanks for your help.

Most of the Ford 4.6 and 5.4 engines were bad about the plugs stripping out. I haven't really heard of the 4.2 having that problem. You may want to check or replace the wires and have the coil pack checked. If the plugs have been replaced, the wires are a good possibility for the misfire. (P0303) On the EGR, there is a passage under the intake that will plug and cause a P0401. Also the DPFE sensor will cause the codes P0401 or P0402.

Hi! I have a question about my 1995 F150 4x4's transmission. I guess I will just ask....
After you start the truck and try to put it into gear it makes a funny noise. it happens with all the gears. so i turned it off and tried then no problem. so i started it again and put the 4 wheel drive into neutral and the noise quit and it went into gear. could that be the transfer case? any help or opinions would be appreciated
