Default Hello! 1996 F250HD Owner

Hello All,

Just wanted to say hi to the Ford community. I have a '96 F250HD (Super Cab, 8' bed) that I bought new back in, wel, 1996. I carry a 1996 Lance 990 (11'3") slide-on camper, also bought new. I have the camper on about 75% of the year. My truck now has 91,452mi. on it. The truck originally came with the cheapy factory plastic manual hubs, but I changed them to Warn heavy-duty manual hubs in the first year.

Well, I guess I might as well ask a question ...

About 3 months ago, my truck developed what I can only describe as a loud humming, almost like a "buzzing". The noise is related to speed and seems to start at about 40-50MPH and get worse to about 60MPH. Strangely, it dissapated around 65MPH but picks up again at 70MPH, getting much louder at 75MPH (believe it or not, I don't think I have ever gone above 85MPH with this thing). It does not seem to be related to the engine, because if I put the truck in neutral at 60MPH and gun the engine a couple of times the noise stays the same.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined and own a lot of tools, air compressor, air tools etc. so I'm not "afraid" to try anything, but I really don't know where to start. I'm leaning towards "anything in the driveline" because it's speed-related, but that could be a LOT of things.

Any ideas? U-joints? Bearings? Transmission/transfer case?

Thanks for any help!

John

Thank you.

So far no takers - maybe I need to move this question to the F250 page

Have you checked that both axles have/are unlocked? Try rotating the axles by hand out at the spindle area on the u-joints.
