Default check NSS?

I would check the NSS (neutral safety switch). The NSS makes sure that your starter will operate only when in park or neutral. if the NSS is out of adjustment....your starter will not engage when in park.

Cougar should have an RWD AOD-E transmission in it if I am not mistaken the NSS is right behind where the shift linkage attaches to the side of the Transmission. Make sure the NSS wiring harness is plugged in.

First check transmission linkage for proper installation when you installed unit into car...

If NSS harness is plugged in...try moving the shifter around and see if car starter turns over in an incorrect gear like R or D. BE CAREFULL AND HOLD FOOT ON BRAKE to prevent car jumping in gear! I have worked on more than one car that had misaligned linkage so when i put the unit back in and filled it up with fluid while car was running it suddenly jumped into gear once the tranny received enough fluid to operate. Its a good idea to keep drive wheels jacked off the ground slightly or set E-brake, block wheels and have someone stay behind wheel when checking this....

Be careful!! being under the car and adjusting NSS and then having someone start car can be dangerous if car is in gear and you dont know it!!

The NSS can be adjusted with a adjustment bolt that holds the NSS alignment in place on the side of the tranny. This adjustment bolt is independent of the Transmission linkage...loosen NSS adjustment bolt and adjust alignment of NSS until it operates correctly in Park AND neutral. then tighten!

Hope this helps......

Default Installed Differrent Transmission No Start

Dealership says no reprograming has to be done when transmission is changed. Starter or Fuel Pump will not kick in when you turn key to start
position dash lights come on as they should on 1999 Cougar. Always started great before transmission was installed Any advice is APPRECIATED.

what is different about the trans that you installed? FYI if you instlled the wrong bolts in the starter they will hit the converter and the car will not turn over... does it make any noise when you try to turn it over? you might want to try swapping the mlp(nss) from the old one to the new one if you still have the trans

Transmission is exact # as the old one You can bypass switch and turn starter over
it turns engine with no unusal noises. Spray fuel in intake and it will run short time till
fuel runs out. But will not start through turning switch like the switch isn't connecting with starter and fuel pump Thanks

make sure all your fuses are good. then swap mlps from trans to trans and see what happens see it it will start then with the linkage off going from park to neutral. circuit runs through mlp back to pcm to energize fuel pump relay and pump.

first check out what ralphie suggests...but if no fix....here are some thoughts....

Sounds like your car might have a factory installed security system that disabled the starter and fuel pump. Your description of security light staying on might mean it was "tripped" when you worked on car. Did the light act differently before you swapped the tranny?
Try disconnecting the battery for about 90 seconds to reset the ECM(brain)....

another thought...if unlikely...
when you dropped tranny....did you stretch any wires or such inside the engine compartment when you tilted the engine/tranny to pull it out the bottom? its unlikely...but look around on the firewall inside engine compartment to make sure you didn't catch any wires or such when you removed cross member and tilted engine/tranny down to remove unit out the bottom.

when you reinstalled tranny....did you miss reconnecting any grounding points on the bell housing? Sometimes the bell housing bolts will act as a grounding point for a wiring harness....I dont remember if your exact car acts in that fashion...but double check to make sure there are no loose wiring harness points...

does car have aftermarket alarm with starter kill??? if so...then look into that..

good luck....
