Default Starter bolt wont tighten

I replaced the starter on my 1994 f-150 automatic 4.9 yesterday and got some shavings from the transmission when I took the top bolt out. So now the bolt wont tighten up and wondering if this could be tapped or fixed any other way?

Thumbs up

Welcome to the site..

Usually a Heli Coil thread repair is the preferred fix. Simple to do.
Depending on how deep the thread loss was sometimes with luck a longer bolt can be used to go deeper to catch good threads.
Tapping oversize can an option at times, but I'd go the Heli Coil kit route if the threads are gone deep into the aluminum, and you have to buy a tap etc anyway.

Thank you for the response. Was told the bolts might go all the way through the bell housing so I could get a longer bolt and throw a lock nut on it. So I'll have to get under there and check that out but if that's a no go, I'll be going with the Heli-Coil route.

Thanks again!

Come to think of it,, I think both upper and lower on that bell housing are open holes. So you should be able to put a through bolt..

I checked it out and it looks like the bottom does not go through but the top does.. which is the one I'm needing to get fixed so I might be in luck! Will tackle it in the morning.

Thanks man.
