Default timing

I have a 96 ford bronco with a 351w in it. I had a timing cover leak so while i was in there i changed the timing chain with a set of gears. i put everything back together like a the directions said and started it up. it wouldn't run right. pulled the spout connector out and timed it to 10 btc like someone told me and put the connector back in and watched the timing go to about 30 btc. what did i do wrong? I took everything back apart and everything is still lined up but it is still backfiring threw the intake????????? I'm lost

Is the decal under the hood that gives instructions for setting the timing still there and readable?

It doesn't matter what the VECI says ( the sticker); almost all EEC IV was set to 10 BTDC (except for tempo/topaz). If you're getting that much timing, check the gears; bet you're off a tooth.

Thanks I thought it was out by the way it sounded so I took it back apart and used a straight edge and it wasn't from what i could tell. I'll look one more time then I'm going to put the chain back in and be done with it. It has been a pain from the opening of the box.
