Default trasmission won't stay in park

I have a 1964 Thunderbird. It has a Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. For some reason it just won't stay in park, even after adjusting the linkage as much as possible. If you have any ideas or knowledge about the problem, please reply. Thanks.

This was/is quite common on older Ford products. You might have worn components in the shifter, such as the detent that provides positive lock in each gear. You need to determine if the problem is in the shift linkage/shifter, or inside the trans. I would suspect something worn in the shifter, especially if it has column shift.

Thanks Dennis W., I have pulled the transmission, and the column shift selector still won't stay in park so I think that the detent might be my problem.

Thanks,
Chandler C.
