Default '98 Windstar Steering noise

My '98 Windstar has an intermittant noise when I'm turning the steering wheel. It's not the buzzing or humming that the Power Steering unit makes, but a clicking noise when the wheel is turned. I brought it into the shop and had it checked out but it stopped making the noise then (Oct '06). It passed NYS inspection so I'm thinking the front end is OK. It was back making the noise just a few days later and the noise is more and more consistant.

I was wondering if there is anything in these vans that goes wrong in the steering column or anywhere else in the steering system that could cause this kind of noise. The van drives fine and the steering feels fine. It's a 3.8V6 with 96K on it. The only other thing that's weird about it is that the Overdrive tranny seems to shift into some VERY low gearing sometimes. Any thoughts from you experienced Ford guys???? :-) Thanx!!! JP
PS: It was hit on the Pass side 2 years ago, but only started making the noise 3 months ago.

we had the same problem with ours and ford found out it was a grommet somewhere around the steering column and they repaced it and it was ok after that. our was more of a sqeaking noise but maybe this will help.

Since that post. I have replaced all front Springs, and both PS hoses. Vehicle kept making clunking noises and the tranny still made a low growling noise. I traded it in on a 2000 Caravan last week. Wish me luck. JP
